What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are restorations that fit completely over the top of a tooth. Dental crowns are often used as part of a variety restorative and cosmetic dentistry and tooth replacement plans. They are available in a variety of materials, including metal, porcelain fused to metal, all-ceramic, and zirconia. To ensure the most cosmetically superior results, we will usually recommend either all-ceramic or zirconia restorations.
Why Choose Metal-Free Crowns?
The most obvious reason why people choose a metal-free dental crown or other restoration is the appearance. These solutions offer results that closely mimic your natural smile. Even porcelain fused to metal restorations that start out looking like healthy tooth structure will darken and look less natural over time. A fully metal-free ceramic or zirconia restoration will maintain its natural appearance even after years of daily wear. If you’ve ever had an allergy or sensitivity to metal, these options may be the best option for you as well.
What is the Metal-Free Restoration Process?
Metal-free dental restorations, like those crafted from other materials, will need to be placed over the course of two trips to our dental office. During your first treatment appointment, we’ll prepare your tooth and design your restoration. Then, we capture bite impressions in order to design your restoration which will then be crafted by our dental lab. Before you leave the office, we’ll place a temporary to protect your smile. When we get the final restoration back from the lab, one of our team members will call to schedule your second appointment. During this follow up visit, we will simply remove your temporary and exchange it for the beautiful, custom restoration.
Do I Need to Care for My Smile Differently?
For the most part, you won’t need to change your daily oral hygiene routine. However, we may recommend some minor adjustments to ensure the best results and help you maintain your flawlessly repaired smile as long as possible. Some steps you can take include:
- Using a softer toothbrush and less abrasive toothpaste to avoid excessive wear
- Using a waxed floss to avoid pulling around the edges of your dental crown
- Wearing protective mouthguards during athletic events and at night if you struggle with teeth grinding and clenching
- Avoiding habits like chewing ice and biting fingernails or opening packaging with your teeth
